Russo Urges NJ Legislature to Solve Hudson County Election Crisis
Hoboken, NJ – March 6, 2025 – Dr. Michael Russo, Hoboken’s 3rd Ward Councilman, released the following statement in light of the NJ Legislature’s recent legislative actions affecting Hudson County:
“Recent legislation passed in Trenton altered the election calendar and created unintended consequences for any municipality that has runoff elections, including the City of Hoboken. As it currently stands, the time constraints between the certification of the November general election and the December runoff election will not allow election officials throughout the State–and specifically here in Hudson County–to properly prepare for the runoff without possibly violating State laws.
With a runway this short between elections, voter confidence in turning around mail in ballots, sample ballots, the resetting of voting machines and other election preparations is in doubt.
Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato has already indicated a legislative effort to move the date of the December 2025 runoff in order to allow for adequate preparation, as well as other logistical improvements. I support that effort and applaud Assemblywoman McCann Stamato for acting quickly for the benefit of Hoboken residents.
I urge the Legislature to approve the Assemblywoman's proposal. The State must act as soon as possible and guarantee all the necessary resources to Hudson County election officials in order to conduct a proper runoff that we can all feel confident about. Voters deserve nothing less.”
