Santos to Mortimer: When is the Union County Republican Reorganization Meeting?
For Immediate Release
June 12, 2024 – Carlos Santos, a duly filed candidate for Chairman of the Union County Regular Republican Organization, issued the following statement to current Chairman Glenn Mortimer
today:
Chairman, having asked this question privately on multiple occasions to you, your legal representatives, and your appointed Convention representatives without receiving an answer — and having been made aware that other local leaders have been informed of a settled upon date — I now ask publicly: What is the date of our County reorganization meeting?
As you are aware, the County organization is required to have this meeting within the next three to four weeks and every other County with a contested race for Chairman has already publicly announced the date of their reorganization meeting.
Why, then, does the Union County Regular Republican Organization refuse to do so? Indeed, it is now well beyond the traditional timeline for notification even by your own historical standards.
With hundreds of new County Committee members set to participate in this process for the first time, it is imperative that this Organization make every effort to have a fair, transparent and open process.
That starts with publicly announcing the date, time and location of the meeting.
As you know, that is why I, along with 50 other County Committee members, signed a letter calling for a special meeting of the County Committee to resolve this question and to discuss the rules and procedures under which the Reorganization will be conducted. We submitted this letter and petition in accordance with the By-Laws of the Organization, but it has been indicated to me by one of your designated Convention representatives that you do not plan to honor the By-Laws and convene that meeting.
The members of the County Committee expect and deserve to know with fair and adequate notice:
1) The date, time, and location of the Reorganization meeting
2) The length of the voting period
3) The credentialing process for eligible voters
4) The nominating process for candidates
5) The means by which voting will be conducted: i.e. hand-counted paper ballots or some other system
Hundreds of duly elected County Committee people are eager to participate. These are Republicans in all 21 towns who have volunteered their time, resources, and effort to grow our party and contribute to its future success — we should make it easy for them to do so.
Thank you,
Carlos Santos
