Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith to join Union County Young Republicans at Event on Stopping Court-Mandated Overdevelopment

Scotch Plains, NJ – Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith, a leading advocate for reforming the current court-driven affordable housing process, will speak at the February 20, 2019 Union County Young Republicans Meeting at 7:00pm at the Stage House Tavern in Scotch Plains.

Since 2015, Court-mandated affordable housing obligations have imposed high density developments on many towns in Union County causing overdevelopment and creating challenges in the areas of infrastructure, public transportation, schools, traffic, open space, and services that are not adequately addressed in the current process.

“It’s time for the residents of Union County and across our state to unite and engage the Legislature and the Governor in demanding legislative reforms regarding municipal affordable housing obligations as opposed to the costly, inefficient and inconsistent court-mandated process currently being imposed us,” stated Mayor Al Smith. “We all support affordable housing, but there is a better legislative process that will provide affordable housing to those who need it while protecting taxpayers and the residential character of our communities.”

“We are honored to have Mayor Al Smith join us at our February 20 meeting,” said J.D. Bryden, Chairman of the Union County Young Republicans. “Mayor Smith has extensive knowledge on this issue and is a leader in the fight for reform. The Republican Party embraces inclusive, diverse communities, but we believe the will of the people, rather than the whim of judges, should make our laws. Anyone who wants to stop overdevelopment in Union County is strongly encouraged to attend this meeting.”
