Scutari Names Pou to Senate Leadership

Trenton – Senator Nicholas Scutari, the incoming President of the New Jersey Senate, announced the selection of Senator Nellie Pou to the Senate Democratic Leadership Team, where she will serve in the newly-created position of Senate Majority Caucus Chair.

“I have known, worked with and respected Senator Pou since we co-chaired the Joint Legislative Committee on Public Employee Benefits Reform in 2006. She is a smart and dedicated legislator who has earned the trust and respect of all her colleagues in the Democratic Caucus,” said Senator Scutari (D-Union/Middlesex/Somerset). “She knows how to build consensus in support of policies that will advance the diverse needs of the people of New Jersey. She will be an important member of the most diverse leadership team in the history of the State Senate.”

Senator Scutari said that Senator Pou will be responsible for working with the team of leaders to develop the caucus agenda and Senate Democratic policies.

Selected in 1997 to fill a vacancy in the General Assembly in the 35^th Legislative District, then-Assemblywoman Pou was elected to the Senate in 2011 and re-elected in 2013, 2017 and 2021. She currently serves as chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, vice-chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and chair of the New Jersey Legislative Latino Caucus.

Already named to leadership are Senator M. Teresa Ruiz who, as Senate Majority Leader, will be the highest-ranking Latina in the history of the New Jersey Legislature, and Senator Sandra Cunningham who was selected to serve as Senate President Pro Tempore.
