Senate Approves Doherty Proposal for Digital Improvements to Homestead Reimbursement Process

Senator Mike Doherty sponsors legislation, approved today by the Senate that would study the feasibility of a centralized database for verification of property taxes paid.

Doherty’s bill, A1044/S1441, could streamline the process for eligible claimants seeking homestead property tax reimbursement.

“A taxpayer who qualifies for reimbursement should not have to jump through hoops to prove they have paid their taxes,” said Doherty (R-23). “This new  database would eliminate the need for claimants to chase down necessary documentation from local tax collectors. This technological advancement is long overdue.”

The measure would require the Division of Taxation to examine the feasibility of the data system. If it is expedient, the division must implement the system or notify the Legislature and governor of any statutory or regulatory reforms necessary.
