Senate Judiciary Committee Will Meet to Hear Testimony on Concerns Related to Juvenile Crime

Trenton – The Senate Judiciary Committee will convene on Thursday to hear testimony from invited guests and members of the public concerning youth involvement in certain crimes, including auto theft, burglary, and carjacking, and how the State can work to reduce such crimes.

“Recent reports of youth involvement in violent crime and unruly behavior by teens along the Jersey Shore this past Memorial Day weekend require our immediate attention,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Senator Brian Stack (D-Hudson). “This hearing will consider how the State can improve public safety and prevent young individuals from engaging in illegal behavior that can severely hinder their future.”

The committee will hear testimony from Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella and will receive remarks from Jennifer Sellitti and Michelle Callari of the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender. Individuals representing various stakeholder groups will also provide their perspectives. This includes the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association, the Newark Public Safety Collaborative, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Lowenstein Center for Public Interest.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will meet on Thursday, June 13th no earlier than 1:00 PM in Committee Room 4, 1st Floor, State House Annex, Trenton, New Jersey. The hearing will be available via the OLS website (https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/live-proceedings).
