After Senate Passes the Bi-Partisan Great American Outdoors Act, Environmental Group Urges House to Take It Across the Finish Line
Billboards in SC, NJ, PA, VA, UT, MI, PA, ID and CA Urge Members of Congress to Support the Great American Outdoors Act’s Swift Passage
The Great American Outdoors Act Would Fund a Popular Conservation Program That Invests in Parks, Public Lands and Communities Nationwide; Legislation Would Create Jobs, Provide Direct Investment for Communities Impacted by Economic Shutdowns, and Expand Access to the Outdoors
WASHINGTON, DC — Starting today, billboards in 10 cities across the US, including San Francisco, Mt. Pleasant (SC), Parsippany (NJ), Scranton (PA), Glen Allen (VA), Virginia Beach, West Jordan (UT), Lansing (MI), Langhorne (PA), and Boise (ID), will go up urging members of Congress in those districts to protect our parks and public lands by passing the Great American Outdoors Act. Earlier this month, the Senate passed the bi-partisan Great American Outdoors Act with more than 70 votes.
The legislation would fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a popular program that invests in parks, public lands and communities nationwide, without costing taxpayers anything. The Great American Outdoors Act, which also closes the maintenance backlog in America’s National Parks would create thousands of jobs, provide direct investment for communities impacted by economic shutdowns and expand access to the outdoors.
The billboards, which were commissioned by Environment America, a network of nearly 30 state environmental groups, specifically target House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA), Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC), Rep. Mikie Sherill (NJ), Rep. Matt Cartwright (PA), Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA), Rep. Elaine Luria (VA), Rep. Ben McAdams (UT), Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Rep. Mike Simpson (ID) to pass the Great American Outdoors Act.

“Congress is on its way to finally, fully fund America’s best conservation and recreation program, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, by passing the Great American Outdoors Act, and we couldn’t be more proud,” said Environment America’s Acting President Wendy Wendlandt. “From local parks and hiking trails to national forests and parks, this bill would be a huge win for the public lands Americans love and rely on for comfort and solace. That is why, with these billboards, we are urging leaders in the House to swiftly approve this critical measure.”
Alongside conservation groups, hunting and fishing groups, outdoor recreation businesses, and more, Environment America has prioritized the LWCF, America’s best conservation and recreation program. Utilizing billboards in several states; lawn signs and banners; a steady series of op-eds; and a continual presence on Capitol Hill and in congressional districts, we have pushed legislators to make the LWCF a more effective tool for protecting the beautiful public lands that enrich so many lives. LWCF would improve access points, expand trails and services, and great new parks and outdoor greenspaces at no cost to US taxpayers. The Great American Outdoors Act would also provide billions to close the maintenance gap in America’s National Parks.
