Senator Cory Booker to Swear In Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty at 2018 Reorganization Meeting

MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY — On Monday, January 1st, 2018 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., the Town of Morristown will hold its 2018 Reorganization Town Council Meeting and welcome special guest, US Senator Cory Booker. Mayor Timothy Dougherty will be sworn in for his third Mayoral term by Senator Booker.

“I’m honored that Senator Booker will be attending our 2018 Reorganization Meeting,” said Mayor Dougherty. “Senator Booker has been a supporter and friend of the Morristown community. I am also eager to begin working with the Town Council on new initiatives to help move Morristown forward.”

Like Mayor Dougherty, Senator Booker began his political career as a councilman, serving first on Newark’s City Council before becoming Mayor in 2006. In October 2013, Booker won the election to the US Senate, making him the first African-American Senator from New Jersey.

Senator Booker has proven his steadfast commitment to standing up for what matters most to New Jerseyans during his time in Washington D.C. He has emerged as a national leader in the drive for criminal justice reform and positive growth in New Jersey, two priority issues for the Senator. He has partnered with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to create a number of economic proposals, from increased small business investments to apprenticeship programs, with the hope of fostering greater mobility and opportunity for Americans across the country.

In a recent statement, Senator Booker wrote, “I look forward to starting the new year by swearing in a friend, colleague, and tremendous public servant, Mayor Timothy Dougherty. Mayor Dougherty possesses a deep commitment to his community and has worked tirelessly to make Morristown an example of economic growth, sustainability and inclusiveness. I am honored to swear him into his third term in office.”

Senator Booker is no stranger to Morristown, having made several trips to the area over the past year. This past August, he accompanied Mayor Dougherty on a small business walking tour. While visiting several of Morristown’s local businesses, the Senator commended the Mayor on his dedication towards promoting local business in Morristown’s thriving downtown community.

At the Reorganization Meeting, Councilwoman Toshiba Foster, Councilman Michael Elms and Councilman-Elect David Silva will all be sworn in by Morristown’s newly appointed Town Clerk, Margot Kaye. The meeting will be held at the Thomas Jefferson School Auditorium at 101 James Street, Morristown. Additional regular business items are also on the agenda.

The meeting is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. Media outlets are encouraged to bring cameras for photographs.
