Senator Kim Statement Demanding Trump Administration Reverse Freeze on U.S. Foreign Assistance

WASHINGTON D.C. –  Today, Senator Andy Kim released the following statement in response to the United States State Department order to freeze funding for almost all U.S. foreign assistance:

“The question right now is whether we want America to be a global leader or not. President Trump’s executive order to retreat from the world leaves a void our adversaries are eager to fill. American leadership abroad improves our lives at home. We make America safer when we invest in supporting democratic partners and combat corruption abroad. We make America more prosperous when we invest in building new markets for our businesses and avenues for innovation around the world. This executive order should be reversed immediately and the Trump Administration should instead work on using our engagements with allies and partners to help America fulfill our limitless potential.”

The order comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order this week to suspend all U.S. foreign assistance programs for 90 days.

Senator Kim serves as the ranking member on the National Security and International Trade and Finance Subcommittee of the House Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, which oversees international financial and development institutions.

In addition to serving on the Senate Banking Committee, Senator Kim is a member of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP); the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and the Special Committee on Aging.

Before being elected to the U.S. Senate, Kim represented New Jersey’s Third Congressional District in the U.S. House and was a career public servant working in national security and diplomacy at the White House, State Department, and Pentagon.
