Senator McKeon: Day Four of the 2024 Democratic National Convention
As the final day of the 2024 Democratic National Convention unfolded rumors swirled through the Windy City about a high-profile, unannounced musical guest who might grace the stage, names like Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé were all mentioned. But when the moment came, there was no surprise guest. And truth be told, none was needed. The headliner we had all been anticipating from the moment we arrived, Vice President Kamala Harris, needed no special guest. She was the star of the night, the one everyone had been eagerly waiting for. She delivered a speech that left the crowd inspired and energized.
Vice President Harris stepped onto the stage to a thunderous ovation. In her address, she outlined a bold vision for a “new way forward,” pledging to be a president for all Americans and reaffirming her commitment to uphold the constitutional principles that define our great nation. She spoke directly to the heart of the middle class, promising to build an “opportunity economy” that strengthens families and ensures the economy works for everyone.
It was her impassioned defense of reproductive rights that truly captivated the audience. Harris called out the Republican Party for their national anti-choice agenda. Warning Americans about the danger of a second Trump administration. “They are out of their minds,” she declared, driving home the reality of what is at stake in this election.
The contrast between the two parties has never been more apparent and the stakes of this election could not be higher. Over the past week, Democrats made a compelling case to the American people that we are the only party fit to lead our great nation. We are the party that fights for working and middle-class families, that is committed to preserving our environment, defending a woman’s right to choose and upholding democracy around the globe.
It was an incredible honor to serve as a delegate at this historic convention. I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to acknowledge the nearly 12,000 volunteers who traveled from across the country to ensure this convention was nothing short of memorable. It was inspiring seeing so many young staffers and volunteers, full of energy and exuberance. It reminded me of when I was young, attending the 1988 convention with then State Senator Dick Codey. The enthusiasm was infectious and gave me great hope for the future of our party.
I also want to extend my deepest thanks to the city of Chicago’s police and first responders, who kept all of us safe throughout our time in the Windy City. And a special shoutout to Chairman LeRoy Jones and the entire New Jersey Democratic State Committee staff for organizing this exceptional week. New Jersey’s 144 delegates were well-represented, and we couldn’t have had a better time.
Now, after an electrifying week, it’s time to head back home to New Jersey. It’s only fitting to echo the words of President Obama, “Let’s get to work.” There are only 74 days until Election Day. It’s time to knock on doors, make phone calls and get out the vote.
