Senator Nia H. Gill announces bill prohibiting employers from asking about worker salary history.

MONTCLAIR – Senator Nia H. Gill is proud to announce her bill prohibiting employer inquiries about worker’s wage and salary experience has gone into effect as of January 1, 2020. This legislation continues the critical work the Senator has done toward equal pay for equal work.

“Hiring practices that take into consideration an applicant’s past salary only perpetuate the pay disparities that exist for women and minorities, often beginning early in their careers. Eliminating salary history as part of the hiring discussion so that businesses are more inclined to assess candidates based on their education, experience and knowledge of the job is important to creating wage fairness in New Jersey”

According to the National Partnership for Women & Families, as of 2019, women are paid 82 cents for every dollar paid to men. African American women are typically paid 62 cents for every dollar to white men, and Latina women make 54 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

“Women continue to make less than men for the same work and basing the hiring salary of an employee on their previous wages only continues this wage discrimination. “This bill would push for more equal pay by making businesses focus their assessments of candidates on their education and experience, rather than their previous compensation, creating a fairer application process for everyone.”

“While we certainly have much work to do to eliminate wage discrimination in the workplace, this is a critical part of that effort”, said Senator Gill.
