Senator Van Drew Applauds DEP Decision to Save Mad Horse Creek Cabins
TRENTON – After numerous pleas by legislators and community members, Senator Van Drew applauds the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) decision not to take action on the historic Mad Horse Creek cabins which had previously been slated for demolition.
The DEP was considering removing the cabins because they believed they were built on protected lands. Cabin owners fought back stating that they had existed for about 60 years, and were built before the DEP bought the land. Some of the buildings date back even further – all the way to the 1800s.
“I am happy to see my letter did not fall on deaf ears, and the DEP decided not to move forward with demolishing the Mad Horse Creek cabins,” said Senator Van Drew (D-Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland). “These cabins have served as a refuge for hunters, fisherman, and boaters for generations, they are truly a historical artifact, and they mean a lot to the community here.”
Senator Van Drew wrote a letter to Commissioner McCabe pleading the case of the community, and others in asking the DEP to allow the cabins to remain standing as a reminder of rural south Jersey’s rich history.
Attached is the letter Senator Van Drew sent to the Commissioner.
