Senator Weinberg, Assemblywoman Vainieri Huttle & Colleagues Sign Joint Letter Calling on NJDSC to Appoint Women to Redistricting Commission

In response to recent reports that New Jersey’s 2021 Legislative Apportionment Commission will include only one woman, and no female Democratic representation, Senator Loretta Weinberg and Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle call on Democratic State Committee Chair John Currie and Vice Chair Peg Schaffer to ensure that women have a voice on the commission. In a letter signed by 15 Democratic women in the legislature, Senator Weinberg and Assemblywoman Vainieri Huttle are calling on Democratic leadership to ensure that women have a seat at the table, especially as decisions are made that so vitally impact the political process. The appeal of the participating Senators and Assemblywomen who have signed onto this letter is one that should not need to be made: include at least one woman on the five-member Democratic team that will represent us on the commission. We urge the Democratic State Chairs to respect the Legislature in the appointments process. In addition to the appointments made by the Senate President and the Assembly Speaker, one of the three appointments should be a woman.
