Sherrill Applauds New Jersey’s First in the Nation Anti-Gun Trafficking Legislation

PARSIPPANY, NJ — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) — a military veteran, former Assistant U.S. Attorney, and longtime advocate for common-sense gun safety legislation — applauded New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and State Senator Troy Singleton as the Real Accountability for Consequences of Unlawful Trafficking of Firearms Act was signed into law:

“Once again, New Jersey is leading the nation by enacting overwhelmingly bipartisan, common sense gun safety legislation that will save lives and hold gun traffickers accountable.

“As lawmakers, it’s our duty to protect children, families, and communities from violence of all kinds — and as a mother of four, it’s unconscionable that gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. We can and must do better.

“The state legislation signed by Gov. Murphy today will give us more tools to crack down on the sale of illegal firearms, which are all too often trafficked across state lines and used to commit crimes in New Jersey.

“I applaud our legislature and Gov. Murphy for their leadership on this important issue. Instead of caving to the extreme factions of his conference, Speaker McCarthy should take note of New Jersey’s example and finally allow the House to vote on gun safety legislation to expand background checks and finally ban assault weapons from our streets.”

Since the day she was elected, Congresswoman Sherrill has been working to pass commonsense, broadly supported gun safety initiatives on the federal level — including universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, and robust restrictions on bump stocks and high-capacity magazines. Last year, she was proud to help pass the first comprehensive gun safety package in decades — the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — to begin enacting crucial reforms.
