Sherrill Appointed to National Defense Conference Committee
Sherrill Will Work With Bipartisan Group to Move National Defense Authorization Act Forward Without GOP Extremist Agenda
Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) was appointed to the bipartisan, bicameral conference committee for the FY2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Sherrill is tasked with negotiating the final text of the bill that sets America’s national security priorities and reconciling the vast differences between the legislation passed by the House and Senate respectively earlier this year.
“For five years, the NDAA has been a chief responsibility of mine as a member of the House Armed Services Committee. The bill we advanced out of committee–with broad, bipartisan support–included major wins for Picatinny Arsenal, research and development, and our nation’s service members. But I was ultimately forced to vote no on this legislation when it came before the House in July after it was transformed by the far right’s extreme social agenda — turning the NDAA into a partisan bill that made America weaker, attacked service members’ reproductive rights, and included policies that further divide our nation.
“As a member of the conference committee, I will fight to restore the NDAA to the bipartisan legislation it historically has been and ensure it isn’t used to fight right-wing culture wars.”
On the House Armed Services Committee, Sherrill helped advance the NDAA with an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 58-1. However, during its consideration on the House Floor, House Republicans inserted damaging provisions to the bill, including limitations to service women’s access to abortion care, mental health services, diversity efforts, and more. In August, the Senate passed its own version of the NDAA, which mirrored the goals and bipartisanship of the original House bill.
After the conference committee reconciles the bills, the NDAA will return to the House for final approval before heading to the President’s desk for signature.
