SHERRILL: CONGRESS PLANNING ANOTHER TAX HIKE ON NJ FAMILIES

CONGRESS PLANNING ANOTHER TAX HIKE ON NJ FAMILIES

Fairfield, NJ — This week Congress released their latest plan to raise taxes on New Jersey families with a new bill that makes the cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction permanent.

This comes on the heels of the newly released IRS data that shows in 2016, New Jersey residents in 20 of our 21 counties took an average state and local tax deduction above the $10,000 cap established in the initial tax bill. In the four counties in NJ-11, the average deduction was $19,000 – well above the cap.

“Make no mistake, this was a bad deal last year when Assemblyman Jay Webber supported it, and it is a bad deal this year,” said Mikie Sherrill. “This plan to hike taxes on New Jersey taxpayers is more proof that we need new leadership in Congress committed to fighting for families in our community. Exploding the deficit and overtaxing our citizens is not responsible governing. Assemblyman Webber consistently sides with Washington politicians over the people of this state.”

Every Member of Congress from North Jersey voted against the 2017 tax bill, but Assemblyman Jay Webber continues to support the tax hike. In addition to raising taxes on New Jersey families, the Congressional Budget Office announced this week that  we will hit a $1 trillion deficit, in part due to the tax bill.
