Sherrill Remembers Congressman Donald Payne Jr. on House Floor

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) joined the Congressional Black Caucus and New Jersey Congressional Delegation honoring the late Congressman Donald Payne Jr. (NJ-10) yesterday evening during a Special Order Hour on the House floor.

I rise today to remember our dear friend and colleague, Donald Payne, Jr.

Don was a model public servant, a man who represented the best our state had to offer. From a young age, he strove to make New Jersey a better place for everyone.

He brought his personal experiences to the halls of Congress, fighting to expand access to health care, which no question changed people’s lives. He was an expert when it came to modernizing our nation’s infrastructure and a partner I turned to as we fought together to make the Gateway Tunnel a reality.

The advice, encouragement, and support Donald offered me when I first entered politics sticks with me to this day. Donald was someone who went out of his way to make others feel welcomed and heard. He was uniquely kind and brought a smile to so many faces, whether it was through his positive attitude, his fierce advocacy, or sharp style.

I will miss him greatly. It was an honor, for many years, to call him my congressman. May he rest in peace.
