Sherrill Statement on Speaker McCarthy’s Announcement of an Impeachment Inquiry

With 11 Legislative Days Until a Government Shutdown, Speaker McCarthy and Marjorie Taylor Green Begin a Partisan Impeachment Vendetta

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced House Republicans’ plan to open an impeachment inquiry against President Biden:

“Instead of governing and finding common ground, Speaker McCarthy has officially handed the reins over to extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Freedom Caucus — inching us closer to a needless government shutdown and now announcing a baseless impeachment inquiry to get political retribution for former President Trump.

“After nearly a year of investigations, House Republicans have produced no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden and, in fact, their allegations have been undermined by their own witnesses.

“The American people face real challenges — from rising child care costs and attacks on reproductive freedom, to the SALT deduction cap and economic competition with China. Even more pressing, we are 11 legislative days from a government shutdown and the Republican majority has not passed the legislation we need to keep the government open.

“The extreme Republican majority has failed the most basic test of leadership and public service. My focus will remain on delivering for New Jersey and making the Garden State a better and more affordable place to live, work, and raise a family.”
