Shin Angulo leads Democratic slate in Cherry Hill
Cahn retiring from Town Hall; Shin Angulo leads ticket of Bauerle, Golkow, and Apell

(Cherry Hill, NJ) — Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo was nominated tonight by the Cherry Hill Democratic Committee to succeed Chuck Cahn as the next Mayor of Cherry Hill Township. Shin Angulo will be joined on the Democratic ticket by incumbent Councilman Brian Bauerle, as well as first-time candidates Michele Golkow, and Jennifer Apell.

Cahn, completing his second term as Mayor at the end of this year, announced his retirement following a successful eight-year tenure of holding the line on taxes.

“I am grateful for Chuck Cahn’s exceptional leadership — guiding Cherry Hill through a period of financial stability that has set an example for municipalities across the State of New Jersey,” said Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo. “As Mayor, I will continue Chuck’s financial stewardship as we continue to be fiscally responsible and expand open space while building on our shared progressive values to make Cherry Hill a place where everyone’s opinions matter, and where government is transparent and responsive to residents.”

“It’s been a great honor and privilege to serve as Mayor of Cherry Hill,” said Mayor Chuck Cahn. “I’m extremely proud of all that we have accomplished in making Cherry Hill a warm, welcoming community and a great place to live for people of all ages. I’m proud to endorse Susan Shin Angulo to succeed me as Mayor, and I know she will be an advocate and champion for each and every resident of Cherry Hill.”

“As a lifelong resident of Cherry Hill — having grown up on the West side, and now living on the East side — I know firsthand the many challenges we face, and I’m ready to take them head-on,” said Jennifer Apell. “I’ve spent years volunteering in our community and I know that Cherry Hill’s shared progressive values are what makes us strong.”

Susan Shin Angulo
Susan Shin Angulo has lived the American Dream and advocates for others to have the same access to opportunities in our community. Susan is no stranger to breaking barriers. In 2009, she was the first Korean-American woman elected to Cherry Hill Township Council. In 2015, she was the first Asian-American elected to the Freeholder Board in the history of New Jersey. If elected, she will be the first Asian-American Mayor of Cherry Hill Township.

Susan’s story is the American story. Susan’s father escaped the brutal North Korean Communist regime and fled south, where he joined the South Korean Marine Corps — serving alongside American soldiers before emigrating with Susan and her mother to the United States when she was 4 years old. Her parents, who became small business owners, instilled in her the values of hard work and education. She began her professional career at the University of Pennsylvania, Institute for Human Gene Therapy and at the Kimmel Cancer Institute.  She has also worked in biotechnology and property management across the region.

Susan is dedicated to her community, twice elected to the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders. She previously served on Cherry Hill Township Council, the Cherry Hill Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Cherry Hill Human Relations Council, and on the board of the Food Bank of South Jersey. She has a Bachelor of Science from Wilkes University and a Post Baccalaureate in Cytogenetics from Thomas Jefferson University. She resides in Charleston Riding with her two daughters and husband, Michael Angulo.

Councilman Brian Bauerle
Brian Bauerle has never shied away from hard work, putting his best foot forward on the soccer field and in the community. Brian, an Assistant Vice President at The Cooper Foundation, a nonprofit organization, brings extensive experience in community development, public policy, neighborhood revitalization, and transportation to his Council role. Brian started his career in the Cherry Hill Office of Community Development and has held leadership positions at the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Department of Transportation. He served on the Cherry Hill Township Planning Board as a member and Chair before he was appointed to Cherry Hill Council in 2014, and elected in 2015.

Brian is a member of the Board of Directors of the Cherry Hill Soccer Club and continues to dedicate his time as a coach, beginning when his children were very young in the recreation program and now in the travel program. He is proud of his role with the Club, as he appreciates the impact that youth sports have on the fabric of the community. Brian and his wife, Kira, live in the Knollwood neighborhood with their three daughters, all of whom attended Kilmer Elementary, two of which now attend Carusi Middle School, and one attends Cherry Hill High School West. Brian is also a member of the Cherry Valley Swim Club.

Michele Golkow
After spending nearly two decades as a prominent community leader in Cherry Hill, Michele Golkow is taking on a new challenge as she runs for elective office for the first time. A 25-year resident of the Siena neighborhood, Michele and her husband Curt – who has lived in the Township since the 4th grade – have raised two children who attended Stockton Elementary School, Beck Middle School, and Cherry Hill High School East.

She is the immediate past president of Temple Beth Sholom and worked extensively in the areas of budget, governance, strategic planning, and community engagement.  Michele is also a past president of Jewish Family and Children’s Services of Southern New Jersey and a current member of its Advisory Council, where she advocates for seniors, individuals with special needs and victims of domestic violence.  In addition, Michele has served previously as a Board member of Uplift Solutions, helping to support businesses and local government in creating sustainable access to healthy, fresh foods in underserved communities. Professionally, Michele has been an attorney practicing employee benefits law at Ballard Spahr in Philadelphia.  She is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.

Jennifer Apell
Jennifer Apell is a lifelong resident of Cherry Hill, who grew up in Brandywoods and graduated from Cherry Hill High School West. A super volunteer in the community, Jennifer has spent her time on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, Planned Parenthood, South Jersey Legal Services, and Jewish Children and Family Services. Just recently, she and her husband co-chaired the Middle East Institute for the Jewish Community Relations Council. Jennifer also served on the Cherry Hill Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Jennifer received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and her J.D. from Villanova University School of Law where she was a member of the Order of the Coif. She also received her Masters in Taxation Law from Villanova. After law school, she clerked for the Hon. Ronald E. Bookbinder in Burlington County. Jennifer now practices in the areas of estate planning, guardianship, and small business law. Jennifer lives in Woodcrest with her husband, Jeff, and their three sons. She has had a lifelong interest in recycling and composting and is committed to a sustainable Cherry Hill.
