Sierra Club Joins Rep. Pallone Against Trump Pulling Out of Paris Climate Agreement Today
WHAT: The New Jersey Sierra Club will join Rep. Frank Pallone (NJ-06) today to oppose President Trump Pulling Out of Paris Climate Agreement. The agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020. 190 countries signed on originally. The Paris Agreement was considered a major environmental success after being signed by both the Obama Administration as well as the leadership in China. During his campaign, Donald Trump promised to remove the U.S. from the accord. Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club released the following statement:
“We are standing together to fight Donald Trump’s reckless and dangerous action that will have long-term, damaging consequences to New Jersey, our country, and the planet. Trump removing us from the historic Paris climate agreement is clearly siding with Big Oil for short-term gain. What he is doing is a long-term sell-out for the environment and public health to take care of corporate polluters. While another Hurricane Sandy event is seventeen times more likely to happen again, he is making our coast suffer with increased sea levels and more severe storms. Places like the Meadowlands, Hoboken, and the Barrier Islands are already going under water. Our cities are inundated with air pollution and toxic sites that only get worse. We are joining Congressman Pallone to stand up to Trump’s blatant anti-environmental policy and demand that the U.S. stay in the Paris Agreement. We must gear up for the resistance against Trump’s agenda and to ensure our country fights climate change and protects our communities.”
