Sierra Club: People’s State of State Call on Murphy to Take Action Now

People’s State of State Call on Murphy to Take Action Now

Trenton, NJ –Today a broad coalition of social justice, environmental advocates, faith leaders, and concerned New Jersey residents gathered outside the State House Annex to call on the Legislature to move on key progressive legislative priorities.

“Today, progressive leaders, activists, grassroots organizations came together to send a message to Governor Murphy and the legislature that we need action on social justice, the environment, and climate change. We cannot continue the status quo. The time for talking is over, we need action. This is especially a warning in an election year. However it is even more important for the Governor to lead,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.

It has been a year since the Murphy Administration has come into power. The New Jersey Sierra Club is concerned that in the last 12 months, Governor Murphy has not fulfilled his commitments to the environment.

“We are in the middle of a climate crisis and there has been a failure of leadership. We are getting impacted by more severe storms, flooding, and sea level rise here in New Jersey.  Instead of moving forward on climate change, our state is being overwhelmed by the 5 natural gas powerplant and 8 pipelines proposals. That’s why we need a moratorium of fossil projects now,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.  The governor and legislature need to stop balancing the budget on the back of the environment. We have to stop raiding environmental settlement funds or critical DEP programs like the Clean Energy Fund. It’s time to let those monies go out and make our water and air cleaner and protect us from climate change.”
