Singer Bill Urging FDA to Release CBD Daily Dose Guidelines Passes Senate

As senators in Trenton debate revisions to the state's medical marijuana program, Senator Robert Singer sends the bill back to the floor in hopes of removing a provision that would charge sales tax. The initiative failed and Singer, along with other senators, voted for the bill, saying the changes will help many people, even if it's not perfect.

Singer Bill Urging FDA to Release CBD Daily Dose Guidelines Passes Senate

Senator Bob Singer’s legislation urging the federal government to establish a safe daily level of CBD consumption unanimously passed in the New Jersey Senate.

“CBD is on billboards, in our shopping malls, it’s on Amazon – it’s everywhere,” said Singer (R-30). “With the hemp business booming, we need to protect and educate consumers. For the safety and well-being of residents in New Jersey and across the country, I urge Washington to clear up confusion about how much CBD is too much.”

Senator Singer’s bipartisan resolution, SR-163, requests that the President and Congress of the United States establish a safe daily recommendation of consumption of cannabidiol.

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a chemical that is prevalent in marijuana and hemp. Cannabidiol, unlike tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC), does not cause a person to feel “high.”

Currently, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that food additives or dietary supplements that contain cannabidiol are illegal. Despite that, more than 1,500 products containing cannabidiol are on the market without clear guidance from the FDA to regulate the products and ensure consumer safety.

“The lack of sensible regulations for cannabinol is not just a medical concern, it’s a key interstate commerce issue,” added Singer. “Rather than leave New Jersey business owners in the dark, let’s enact practical protocols to boost trade and opportunity in this growing industry.”

The absence of a transparent FDA policy and the patchwork regulation of the substance by the states creates a complex legal framework for companies selling cannabidiol products. Businesses that sell CBD goods find it difficult to transact sales across state lines because banks and insurance companies are hesitant to service the industry.
