Singer Intros Resolution Urging U.S. House to Censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib for Holocaust Remarks

Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) has introduced a resolution urging the United States House of Representatives to formally censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib, in light of her recent comments regarding the Holocaust.

In a May 2019 interview on a Yahoo News podcast, Rep. Tlaib, a lawyer and politician who currently represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, stated that “there’s a kind of a calming feeling” when she thinks of the Holocaust.

Rep. Tlaib’s comments, which were made just days after the annual Day of Holocaust Remembrance, have been widely-characterized as culturally-insensitive and anti-Semitic.

“Hate has no home in the halls of government. The people of Michigan, and this country, deserve a representative who will serve everyone equally, regardless of creed or national origin. Any official who harbors religiously intolerant views has no business serving in elected office,” Senator Singer (R-30) said. “In light of Rep. Tlaib’s comments, I urge the House to immediately censure her and join the chorus of leaders who are banding together to speak out against anti-Semitism.”

Senator Singer’s resolution, SR-145, officially urges the United States House of Representatives to censure Representative Rashida Tlaib and condemn her comments regarding the Holocaust.

“We have a responsibility as elected leaders to condemn injustice and ensure that we, as a society, remember the lives lost during the Holocaust,” Senator Singer added. “Our children shouldn’t grow up in a world where people dismiss this atrocity as simply another chapter in a history book – or deny its existence all together. May we never forget the millions who perished just because of their faith,” Singer added.

If approved, copies of Sen. Singer’s resolution will be transmitted to the United States Secretary of State, President Trump and Vice President Pence; House Speaker Pelosi, House Minority Leader McCarthy, U.S. Senate President Pro Tempore Grassley, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Schumer, and every member of Congress elected from New Jersey.

“Israel and New Jersey have very strong ties, and our state is home to many who practice the Jewish faith,” Singer stated.  “I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will join me by swiftly advancing and supporting this resolution, so that we can make a uniform call for action, and send a strong message that the Garden State will never turn a blind eye to anti-Semitism.”
