Sires Votes for Iran War Powers Resolution

(Washington D.C.)- Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.Con.Res.83 by a vote of 224 to 194:

“I voted in favor of this resolution, which I cosponsored, in order to reassert Congress’ constitutional authority to declare war and authorize the use of military forces. The hostilities between the U.S. and Iran over the past few days have reinforced the need to ensure that any further military action is done in consultation with Congress. Any decision to introduce U.S. troops to new conflict or hostilities must be made collectively amongst our elected leaders, not solely at the impulse of the executive branch.”

H.Con.Res.83, directs the President to terminate the use of U.S. military forces to engage in hostilities in, or against, Iran unless Congress has declared war or enacted specific statutory authorization for the use of U.S. forces, or unless the use of forces is necessary to defend against an imminent armed attack.
