Black History Month Social Highlighting Black Businesses and Organizations in South Jersey

Cherry Hill, NJ —The South Jersey Young Democrats Black Caucus (SJYDBC) partnered with the South Jersey Young Democrats (SJYD) and Burlington County Young Democrats (BCYD) to host a Black History Month Celebration on Thursday, February 21st at the Camden County Democratic Headquarters in Cherry Hill, NJ. Members of the community, partner organizations and elected officials gathered in celebration of Black businesses and Black organizations in South Jersey.

“The time has come to empower, educate and provide tools to set up Black community members for success. This is why it is imperative that we lift up Black businesses and Black organizations who contribute to and help build our community.” said Fatima Heyward, President and Co-founder of the SJYDBC. Promoting and increasing black representation in leadership, educating the community about getting involved in the democratic process and advocating for policies that will elevate communities of color, are just a few of the goals of SJYDBC. “The South Jersey Young Democrats were proud to co-sponsor the Black Caucus’s Black History Month Social. The social highlighted the many ways that young African Americans are leading throughout South Jersey – whether through serving in elected office, supporting candidates in electoral campaigns, or running the many different for profit and non-profit organizations that attended that evening,” stated John Mulholland, President of the SJYD.

Black businesses and organizations that showcased their services and causes included Black Lives Matter-NJ Burlington Chapter, Eleven 22 Productions, Feminist Business Society, LaBelle Art Gallery, NAACP Camden County East Chapter- NJ, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc.-Southern New Jersey Chapter, New Jersey Citizen Action Fair Housing and Outreach, Shy Speaks, SNJ Millennials, Southern Burlington County NAACP, South Jersey Black Heritage Museum, The Huddle of South Jersey, and Pure Genesis Health. “It was an honor to partner up in celebrating Black History Month. History should not be forgotten and we need to make it a priority that we educate our communities on how we have improved as a society, thanks to our brothers and sisters in the Black community,” stated Raj Bath, President of the BCYD. The South Jersey Young Democrats Black Caucus, South Jersey Young Democrats and Burlington County Young Democrats remain committed to supporting young leadership in all of its forms to improve South Jersey communities.

Elected officials included Freeholder Ashley Bennett, Lawnside Councilwoman Rhonda Wardlow-Hurley, Camden City Councilwoman Felisha Reyes Morton and Salem City Councilman Tim Gregory.
