Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter Announces New Photo ID Program for County Residents

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter this month began issuing County Resident photo Identification Cards as an option for proving identity, age, or residency as may be required by government agencies, businesses, and employers.

“The Clerk’s Office already helps residents obtain a variety of legal documents, such as Passport processing, business trade name registrations, and veteran IDs,” said Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter. “Offering these county resident IDs is a natural extension, and we anticipate many residents will be interested.”

To obtain a county resident photo ID, individuals much prove their identify with a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or a valid passport. In addition, they have several options for proving their Somerset County residency, including a lease or rental agreement, a utility bill, bank statement, pay stub, or any other government-issued ID. Minors may provide a school ID plus a parent or guardian’s signature. Additional details are available on the County Clerk’s website.

“The Office of Human Services is delighted to see the Somerset County Clerk offering a county ID, which will benefit underserved communities as they apply for support programs, whether related to physical or mental health, substance use, homelessness, or food insecurity,” said Michael Frost, Somerset County Director of Human Services. “Photo IDs often are barriers for people who cannot easily obtain them via the Motor Vehicle Commission.”

The identification cards will be provided by the County Clerk at a cost of $10 and are valid for five years.

County IDs can be obtained during regular business hours of the County Clerk’s office, located in the Somerset County Administration Building at 20 Grove Street in Somerville, NJ. The hours are Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with extended hours every Wednesday until 6:00 p.m.
