Somerset County Park Commission Reopens Green and Colonial Park Tennis Courts

Tennis and Pickleball Courts to Open with COVID Precautions

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission will open the Green Knoll Tennis Center and Colonial Park Tennis courts for personal, league, and instructional use for the 2021 season from March 27 to October 22. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Section recently named the Park Commission as its Member Organization of the Year for the quality and beauty of its tennis courts, and also the resources and services available to guests and the community.

Green Knoll, at 587 Garretson Road in Bridgewater, has a total of 10 tennis courts and Colonial Park, on Colonial Drive in Franklin, has eight courts of which two are striped for pickleball. In total there are four Colonial Drive pickleball courts for walk-on and tournament play. All the facilities are all-weather, outdoor courts and are lighted for evening and nighttime play.

Green Knoll courts will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Colonial Park courts will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Green Knoll Tennis Center and Colonial Park Tennis courts can be reserved by calling the attendant at (908) 722-1200 x5021 during playing hours. Messages left when the attendant is assisting players or otherwise unavailable will be returned as quickly as possible. Fees are $8 per hour on weekdays until 5 p.m., and $10 weekdays after 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.  Courts will be available at no cost on a first come first served basis on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from March 27 to June 23 and from September 7 to October 22.

Until the courts open on March 27, residents can ask questions or schedule court time by calling or visiting the Green Knoll Tennis Courts on:

  • Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon
  • Thursday, March 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

United States Tennis Association (USTA) and pickleball league request forms can be obtained online at somersetcountyparks.org/activities/tennis/tennis.html or by calling the Green Knoll Tennis Center at (908) 722-1200 x5021. League registrations are $50, and standard court fees are due at the time of play.

All players and spectators will be required to observe all applicable restrictions and limitations imposed by Executive Orders and the like and the USTA’s COVID-19 precautions, including social distancing and masks for spectators. The Somerset County Park Commission stewards nearly 15,000 acres of county-owned open space, which is visited by 2 million park users each year. Five golf courses have three driving ranges, a pitch and putt course and a recreational putting course. Other attractions include a riding stable, an environmental education center, two tennis facilities, an outdoor pool, paddle boating, a rock and rare plant garden, an award-winning rose garden, arboretum, and a sensory and fragrance garden. Six county parks also offer amenities such as athletic fields, picnic facilities, bike paths, fishing, birdwatching, cross country skiing, and hiking.
