SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County Board of Elections has selected Bound Brook resident Karen Carroll as its new Chair leading into the 2024 Presidential election. Carroll has served on the Board for the past dozen years since being appointed in 2012, and was elevated to the new position following the retirement of Anthony DeCicco. She is the longest-serving
member of the Board of Elections, and has been a leader through the Hurricane Sandy, the all-mail COVID election in 2020, the transition to early voting in 2021, and the transition to new voting machines in 2022-2023.

“At a time when the MAGA followers of Donald Trump are falsely calling into question the conduct of elections in the United States, Somerset County is lucky to have someone as
honorable and experienced as Karen Carroll at the helm,” said Somerset County Democratic Organization Chair Peg Schaffer. “She, along with the other Board members and Somerset
County Clerk Steve Peter, will ensure that Somerset County’s elections are fair, transparent, and accurate.”

The Somerset County Board of Elections is made up of six members, three appointed by the County Democratic Organization and three appointed by the county Republican Chair. The Board is responsible for maintaining the voter registration lists, operating in person balloting for early voting and on election day, and receiving and processing mail-in ballots. All meetings of the Board of Elections are public meetings, including the review and determinations of any
disputed ballots.

With regard to elections Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter is responsible for certifying county candidates, drafting and printing ballots, processing mail-in ballot requests and distributing mail in ballots, printing provisional ballots for in-person voting, and counting and certifying the final results of elections.
