South Jersey Young Democrats Launch Black Caucus

Camden, NJ —The South Jersey Young Democrats (SJYD), a democratic organization for members 40 and under, launched the South Jersey Young Democrats Black Caucus (SJYDBC) on Friday, August 31st at CoWork Street in Camden, NJ. Members of the community, partner organizations and elected officials gathered in celebration of the newly formed organization and donated school supplies to the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey.
“The purpose of the South Jersey Young Democrats Black Caucus is to lift up the voices and advocate on behalf of black leaders in the community. The time has come to empower, educate and provide tools to set up our leaders for success.” said Fatima Heyward, President and one of the founding members of the SJYDBC.

Promoting and increasing black representation in leadership, educating the community about getting involved in the democratic process and advocating for policies that will elevate communities of color, are just a few of the goals the SJYDBC hopes to address throughout its existence.

“I’m incredibly excited by the launch of the SJYD Black Caucus. The caucus will further empower young, black Democrats throughout South Jersey. It will ensure that the voice of this community is heard both inside and outside of our organization by providing the skills, network, and sense of community necessary to make a significant, lasting change in our state.” stated John Mulholland, President of the SJYD.

The current members are committed to increasing membership and defining an agenda and purpose that will positively impact communities in South Jersey.
Notable attendees and elected officials included Camden City Councilwomen Dana Burley and Sheila Davis, Camden City Councilman Angel Fuentes, Mayor Darvis Holley of Willingboro Township,  Freeholders John Young and Bill Moen, Assemblyman Bill Spearman, and Tanzie Youngblood.
