Statement by Congressman Rob Menendez on Ruling Keeping Elizabeth Detention Center Open

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Congressman Rob Menendez today released the following statement:

“I am deeply disappointed in today’s ruling that allows CoreCivic’s Elizabeth Detention Center (EDC) to remain operational. This facility’s continued operation goes against the values and wishes of our state and district, diverse and welcoming places made better by the contributions of generations of immigrants.

“For nearly three decades, the EDC has faced lawsuits, complaints, and media reports alleging inhumane conditions, including physical and verbal assault and poor medical and sanitary conditions. With this ruling, immigrants detained at the EDC will continue to be at risk of the shameful conditions that have stained this facility and harmed our community members. The EDC is a symbol of our broken immigration system – putting CoreCivic’s profits above the safety of our immigrant communities – and is unwelcome in our district and in New Jersey.

“This ruling does not mean the end of our fight. We will continue to stand alongside the State of New Jersey, advocates, and all those working to achieve justice until this facility is finally closed.”
