Statement by Mikie Sherrill on the Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

BLOOMFIELD — Today, Mikie Sherrill released the following statement on the 52nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision:

“Here in New Jersey, we respect women’s abortion rights and access to comprehensive reproductive health care. But in the years since the president’s hand-picked Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, we’ve seen what it means when this freedom is taken away: Women bleeding out and even dying after being denied abortion care, teenage rape survivors crossing state lines to get an abortion, and American servicewomen stationed in states like Texas and Florida stripped of their reproductive rights.

“Now, with full Republican control in Washington, we can’t risk anything in New Jersey. That’s why as governor, I’ll work to enshrine abortion rights into our state constitution and stockpile the abortion pill Mifepristone.

“We know Republicans in this race will do the exact opposite — they’ve voted to defund Planned Parenthood and even support banning abortion across New Jersey. Let’s not forget, the last Republican governor of New Jersey defunded Planned Parenthood in every budget.

“That’s why this race for governor is so important. We have an opportunity to chart a new path forward in 2025 and make sure New Jersey is a state that expands our rights and freedoms — not restricts them.”

Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, Mikie has led the fight to protect women’s access to emergency abortion care, block efforts to ban medication abortion like Mifepristone, and ensure military servicewomen have access to abortion and contraception, no matter where they are stationed. She also introduced legislation to stop the practice of “judge shopping” — a common tactic anti-abortion advocates use to hand-pick a court and outcome by filing lawsuits in single-judge divisions where they are all but assured to get a favorable outcome.
