Statement By Peg Schaffer On President Joseph R. Biden

President Joe Biden has been a great American servant for more than 50 years, and nothing he has done in that time has been as heroic, as selfless as his decision today to step down as the Democratic nominee. I am heartbroken that he will not stand for a second term, but fully supportive of his decision to put the nation’s future ahead of his personal ambition.

We as Democrats now face the challenge of finding a nominee for president, and I call on all Democrats to be as selfless as our president as we go through the process. The 2024 elections from Bedminster to the White House are about freedom and democracy, and we cannot allow internal divisions to risk the American Experiment.

Donald Trump must be defeated at the ballot box, but we also need to provide our next president with a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate to act as a bulwark against the radical Supreme Court and extremist anti-abortion and anti-freedom governors. Democrats must come together for the good of our country, for the future of our children, and for the safety of our world.
