Statement by Rep. Mikie Sherrill on House Republicans’ Partisan Israel Funding Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, a Navy veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement after voting against the House Republican funding bill:

“Congress needs to swiftly pass security assistance for Israel, humanitarian aid for Gaza, and support Ukraine’s efforts against Vladimir Putin’s brutal war of aggression. But today’s partisan bill from Speaker Johnson is unserious and inadequate. Security assistance for Israel has historically been bipartisan and that support continues today – but now, House Republicans are attempting to legislate through MAGA talking points. Even the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has said their proposed ‘offsets’ would add more than $12 billion to the national deficit, making it easier for the ultra-wealthy to avoid tax obligations.

“The global conflicts we face are unquestionably intertwined. I am hopeful the Senate will pursue a bipartisan path forward that will strengthen America’s security at home and across the world.”

Last month, the President requested funding to advance U.S. national security interests and support our allies and partners across the globe. It included security support for Israel’s defense against terrorism, humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians in Gaza, aid for Ukraine’s fight against Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion, and Taiwan’s security amid rising aggression from China. It also included funding to strengthen border security and enforcement.

Instead of addressing our global challenges and fight for democracy as a whole, Speaker Johnson introduced a bill that only includes funding for Israel – without humanitarian aid for the crisis in Gaza – with purported “offsets” that the Congressional Budget Office reports would actually add more than $12 billion to the national deficit and reduce tax revenues by nearly $27 billion.
