“Today I mourn with the residents of Essex County and the State of New Jersey on the loss of Lieutenant Governor Shelia Oliver. She was not just a former colleague in the NJ General Assembly she was my friend,” said Mayor Albio Sires of West New York. “She was a trailblazer being elected as the first African American Lieutenant Governor of the State of New Jersey and she also served as Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly. Lieutenant Governor Oliver dedicated her public service to help those less fortunate and fought for NJ working families so they were able to provide for a better quality of life for their families.

“The Oliver family has lost a beloved family member. My condolences go out to her mom Jeanine Oliver, her brother Charles Oliver as well as her nieces and nephews. Her leadership efforts on behalf of the residents of New Jersey will succeed her for many years to come.”
