Statement by Freeholder Cappelli regarding Purdue Pharma’s guilty plea to federal charges

The statement below is by Freeholder Cappelli regarding Purdue Pharma’s guilty plea to federal charges.

“Purdue Pharma’s guilty plea brings little comfort to those of us who seek actual justice for the nearly half a million Americans who have lost their lives as a result of the opioid crisis. The company will pay just a fraction of the billions it owes to the American taxpayer as a result of its crimes, meanwhile the wealthy Sackler family and the executives responsible for peddling addictive, dangerous drugs across the country will remain free and uncharged.

Our community has suffered through the loss the hundreds of friends, family, and loved ones due to the Sacklers’ greed and moral vacancy, and these charges do nothing to hold to account those responsible. They got rich by causing death and addiction yet continue to face no true penalties other than their separation from the company they used to destroy lives and livelihoods.

Camden County will continue to aggressively pursue its legal case against Perdue Pharma. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families of those who have lost a loved one to the disease of substance use disorder and the ones who continue to fight through it. We will never forget them, and we will never stop fighting.”
