Statement from Assemblywoman Pintor-Marin on the Passing of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver

(TRENTON) – “Today, we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of a titan in New Jersey politics and sister, Lieutenant Governor, Sheila Oliver. As the first Black woman Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly and the second Black woman in the nation’s history to lead a house of a state legislature, Sheila shattered barriers and served as an inspiration to countless aspiring young leaders. During her tenure as the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, her initiatives brought positive change to countless communities. Her dedication and vision transformed lives, leaving a lasting impact on the state’s development and progress.”

“It was her warm and caring nature that truly set her apart. Sheila had an incredible ability to uplift spirits during meetings with her smile and contagious laughter. She made everyone feel valued and cared for, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie. I had the honor and privilege of being sworn in by Sheila, while holding Amelia when she was a little over a year. What a role model for my daughters and many generations of women to come to pursue their dreams fearlessly and excel in positions of power through kindness, resilience, and grace.”
