Statement from Mayor Derek Armstead on the Passing of Congressman Donald Payne Jr.
Linden, New Jersey, April 29, 2024 – My wife and I are deeply saddened by the devastating passing of
our devoted friend, colleague, and dedicated public servant of New Jersey, Congressman Donald Payne,
Jr.
His tenacious spirit and compassionate trait will be deeply missed. As a former union worker and toll
collector, he understood the hardships that our working families endure. Not only did he advocate for the public in his early years as Newark City Council President and during his tenure on the Essex County Board of Commissioners.
We will hold his memory close to our hearts as we build upon the Payne family’s deep legacy of service in advocating for the communities. “He was a dedicated leader and supporter who adored Newark and
Essex County residents. He most certainly will be missed. I send my sincere condolences and prayers to
his family” said Mayor Arnstead. Donald Payne Jr., 65, represented N.J. Congressional District 10, which includes part of Essex, Hudson, and Union counties, including areas of Newark. Rep. Payne, Jr. was an unwearied advocate for New Jersey families, working to create jobs and grow the economy, protect and invest in our children.
Donald Payne Jr., who planned to run for reelection in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, was first elected to the House in 2012, succeeding his late father, Rep. Donald Payne Sr., who passed away from colon cancer. Donald Payne Jr., was running unopposed in the Democratic primary. His legacy will continue to inspire others to pursue justice and equality in our society. Donald Payne Jr., leaves behind his wife and three children.
