Statement from Governor Phil Murphy on Trump/Van Drew Rally Announcement
TRENTON, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy today released the following statement regarding the announcement of a rally in Wildwood later this month featuring President Donald Trump and Rep. Jeff Van Drew:
“With the impeachment process continuing to unfold in Washington and unrest in the Middle East, the last thing President Trump should be focused on is coming to New Jersey to campaign for Jeff Van Drew. Doing so speaks to President Trump’s misplaced priorities and refusal to put what’s best for the country ahead of his own politics.
“While President Trump and the Republicans have been showering the wealthy with tax cuts and pinching the middle class by slashing the SALT tax deduction, Democrats are working to enhance quality of life for our middle class and working families. Working with the Legislature, we’ve ushered in paid family leave and equal pay protections, and just this week New Jersey’s minimum wage increased to $11/hour on its way to $15/hour. President Trump and the Republicans in Washington haven’t delivered any progress for the middle class, and New Jerseyans know that Jeff Van Drew now stands firmly with that failed record.
“New Jersey is a state that supports the middle class and those striving to join it. Those are values that President Trump does not share, and his newly-minted fellow Republican Jeff Van Drew will never act to hold him accountable. That’s why it’s so important for Democrats to retake this district in November.”
