Statement by A.J. Oliver, Chair, Morristown Democratic Party

The statement by the Morris County Democratic Committee calling on me to step down as Chair
is unfortunate.

The Democratic Party is a big tent and prides itself on diversity, inclusion, and a heart for those
who are vulnerable and marginalized in society. The Morris County Democratic Committee
does not have a litmus test for any one issue. The Party should not have a purity test for its
members, candidates, or leaders particularly when it comes to the issues of conscience such as
abortion. National party leaders have said time and time again that there is room in the party for
Pro-Life Democrats. Those who express this view and advocate for a consistent Whole Life
ethic should not have to be continually marginalized and silenced by a Party that has led the way
for marginalized groups to be represented and included.

A majority of the Whole Life issues that I advocate for prioritize helping those in need and are
the pillars of Democratic policies and priorities. They include: reducing the maternal mortality
rate, pregnancy support, reducing food insecurity, mental health needs, and support for working
families. These are issues we can all agree on as Democrats.

I am honored to be the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Morristown. During my tenure as
Chair, I have worked hard to increase Democratic participation and success. Under my
leadership we have had multiple voter registration and community outreach efforts, fundraised
and volunteered for campaigns around the county, provided extensive support for the Morris
County Democrats, and swept the Mayor and At-Large Town Council races in 2021 in
resounding fashion.

The mission statement of the Morristown Democrats stresses that we advocate strong economic
growth, honest & accountable government, and protecting civil rights and liberties. I will
continue to advocate for these principles as Chair.
