Statement of Somerset County Democratic Chair Peg Schaffer on the Passing of Marie Scannell

“Today we learned that our good friend Marie Scannell passed away, and I could not be more devastated. Marie was a force in our community as the chair of the Somerset County Democratic Party and South Bound Brook Democrats, as well as serving as the Executive Director of the Food Bank Network of Somerset County for 34 years. So many residents of her beloved hometown and county have better lives because of her work, and we all owe Marie a debt of gratitude.

“But Marie was also a joyous person, an immediate and generous friend to everyone she met. She was genuinely interested in other people, eager to learn more about them, to offer a hand up or a hug or whatever was needed. You knew that when you were with her, whether standing together in a large crowd or just the two of you in a diner booth, Marie was one hundred percent there with you and happy to be so.

“Marie was one of the giants of Somerset County, and on behalf of all her friends at the Somerset County Democratic Committee I offer her loved ones our deepest condolences and warmest embrace. We are blessed to have known Marie Scannell, and she will be profoundly missed.”
