Statement from Opportunity New Jersey on Fair Workweek Bill

Opportunity New Jersey Co-chairs Tom Bracken and Michele Siekerka have released the following statement in response to NJ S921 (the “Fair Workweek” bill), sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, which was introduced and referred to the Senate Labor Committee this week:

“The purpose of this bill is ostensibly to give service sector employees more notice and flexibility with their schedules. In reality, this will end up hampering both businesses and employees, much in the same way that an increased minimum wage has had a damaging impact on workers’ job stability and available work hours. The mandates being piled onto New Jersey businesses have dampened our competitiveness and chilled our business climate, which is why our Plan for an Affordable New Jersey calls for at least a two-year moratorium on new government actions and taxes that impact job creators in the Garden State. If we expect to lead our peer states in job growth, we must cultivate a business-friendly environment that allows free enterprise to work.”
