Statement by Peter Ward, President of the Hotel Trades Council:

The Freeholder fight unites more than it delights.
Statement by Peter Ward, President of the Hotel Trades Council:
“The upcoming increase in New Jersey’s minimum wage to $15 is a historic win for working families across the state. Our union is incredibly proud to see the State of New Jersey become one of the first in the country to enact such progressive wage legislation, which will improve the lives of so many hard-working New Jerseyans. I want to thank Governor Phil Murphy for his leadership in making this a priority and working with legislative leaders to get it done.”

The Hotel Trades Council (HTC) is the union for hospitality workers in Northern New Jersey and New York State, representing a total of 37,000 hotel and casino workers, including over 5,000 in New Jersey. The union is actively organizing and has more than doubled its New Jersey membership over the past five years. HTC’s state-wide contract in New Jersey, announced alongside Governor Phil Murphy and Mayor Ras Baraka in 2018, included a number of victories for hotel workers in addition to voting rights, including raises of up to $6 per hour, quality family healthcare, protections for immigrants including Sanctuary Workplace language, and mandatory “panic buttons” to protect housekeepers from unwanted advances from guests.
