Statements from leaders of the Somerset County Democratic Committee on Joe Biden’s selection of Senator Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States

Somerville, NJ – Joe Biden made a brilliant choice in selecting Senator Kamala Harris as his partner in the race for the White House, underscoring Democrats’ celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in America. Senator Harris represents the largest state in the nation, fought against mortgage fraud as the Attorney General of California, and has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to take on the big fights that make a difference in everyday American lives. I am thrilled to support the Biden/Harris ticket and know that Somerset County and New Jersey are behind this historic team that celebrates the richness and diversity of Somerset County and the United States of America. – Peg Schaffer, Somerset County Democratic Committee Chair

When I heard that Senator Kamala Harris was going to represent me as the Vice Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, I felt immense pride. As the first African American and first African American woman to serve as Freeholder and Freeholder Director in Somerset County, I know something about breaking barriers and I will fight with my family, friends, and party to see that Senator Harris becomes Vice President Harris and breaks a barrier many of us felt unbreakable. – Shanel Robinson, Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders Director

On the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in America, in a time of an international pandemic and during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, Joe Biden’s selection of Senator Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for Vice President couldn’t be more ideal. Kamala has been the top prosecutor of the largest state in the nation and also fought for police reform as a United States Senator. She is the child of immigrants from Jamaica and India, and she has risen to the highest levels of success as a first-generation American. She has run for president, but like Joe Biden in 2008, she is ready to support the Democratic nominee and serve the American people as our Vice President. We are thrilled. – Margaret Weinberger, President, Somerset County Federation of Democratic Women
