“Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”~Helen Keller

Ocean Township, Monmouth County: We have witnessed a deepening divide in governing bodies across the country, from Congress down to the local level; school boards are sadly no exception to that. The bitterness in a public display is not a favorable impression of school districts to the communities they serve. While disagreements are welcome, we should strive to return to the ideals that you can disagree with your colleague(s) without being disagreeable. Differ on policy, but mutual respect is key. This is paramount for being on a school board, as the first priority of those we serve is our students, and setting an example of collaboration is critical to that.

Steve Clayton has demonstrated throughout his professional career that he can bring people together. Steve is a key proponent of listening and understanding different perspectives to see where they can be room for agreement and compromise that would move the Board and school district forward. Being a school board member takes a lot of work, both in terms of trying to get elected, and once elected, it is a significant amount of time each Board member volunteers in the pursuit of making our communities better in a way they see fit. Mutual respect and listening go a long way. Together we can achieve more; our students deserve nothing less.

About Steve: Steve is a proud Ocean graduate who graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park and Carnegie Mellon University. He presently serves as Director of Development for a statewide nonprofit focused on ensuring that children can grow up safe, healthy, and educated. Steve is an avid runner, reader, and history buff.
