STEVE SWEENEY VOWS TO END PJM’S STRANGLEHOLD ON NEW JERSEY RATE PAYERS
Woodbury, NJ To protect the interests of New Jersey residents and ensure equitable energy practices, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Sweeney announced today that his administration would join in the Pennsylvania lawsuit against PJM Interconnection, LLC, the regional transmission organization responsible for coordinating the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states, including New Jersey.

Sweeney emphasized that this action is critical for safeguarding New Jersey’s energy future and addressing longstanding concerns regarding PJM’s operational practices and policies. “As the next Governor of New Jersey, I am committed to upholding the rights of our residents and ensuring that they have access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy,” Sweeney stated. “We must take a definitive stand against practices that unfairly burden our consumers and hinder our state’s energy goals.”

The lawsuit will target several key issues, including allegations of market manipulation, lack of transparency in pricing mechanisms, and the impact of PJM’s operations on New Jersey’s ability to meet its renewable energy targets. Sweeney believes that PJM has not acted in the best interest of its member states and has, at times, placed undue financial stress on consumers and local utility companies in New Jersey.

“New Jerseyans deserve a robust energy market that reflects their needs and priorities, and we must hold organizations like PJM accountable,” continued Sweeney. “This legal action is a necessary step to ensure transparency and accountability within our energy grid, fostering a more competitive market that ultimately benefits all consumers.”

A Governor Sweeney administration would work closely with the all 13 PJM states to advocate for needed change within PJM. All remedies for the alleged violations must be explored and Governors need to advocate for a fairer marketplace moving forward. “This is about building a sustainable and equitable energy future for the generations to come at a price families can afford,” he added.
