Sweeney Attends Flag Raising at Battleship New Jersey for American Red Cross Month

Camden – Yesterday Senate President Steve Sweeney spoke at the American Red Cross Flag raising ceremony aboard the Battleship New Jersey to kick off Red Cross Month in New Jersey.

“The Red Cross represents some of the very best in American values,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). “It brings volunteers and resources from all over the country together in order to shelter, service and help those in need. Whether that is a local blood drive or responding to a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy, the Red Cross is always there with help and support for those who need it most.

“This nation owes the Red Cross and each individual volunteer, each hero, a debt of gratitude a hundred fold over. I thank them for all they have done, for all they are doing and for all I know they will continue to do in the upcoming year.”

“It was wonderful to have Senate President Sweeney at our Red Cross Month Kick Off,” said Laura Steinmetz, Senior Specialist, Government Relations, American Red Cross. “We truly appreciate all that he does for the Red Cross and the people of New Jersey. He has been a great advocate for the organization over the years.”

March has been recognized as Red Cross Month for more than 75 years. Beginning with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943, every U.S. President has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the American Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world.
