Sweeney, Burzichelli & Taliaferro Announce Receipt of Emergency Aid for Local School Districts

Glassboro, Alloway & Pittsgrove-Elmer To Receive Additional Funding

Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Deputy Speaker John Burzichelli and Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro today announced that three local districts will be awarded substantial amounts of emergency aid from the State Department of Education. Responding to the requests of the Third District legislators, the state will allocate a total of approximately $1.89 million to Glassboro, Alloway and Pittsgrove-Elmer.

The Glassboro School District is receiving approximately $1.7 million, the Pittsgrove-Elmer School District is receiving $107,000 and the Alloway School District will get $83,000.

“Our top priority is to provide the support and resources for local schools so that they can continue to give our students a quality education,” said Senator Sweeney. “These grants will be used wisely and effectively by the school districts so the teachers and administrators can do their jobs.”

“Emergency aid is only given to school systems that the Education Department knows will use the funding effectively,” said Assemblyman Burzichelli. “We fought to get this aid but we knew we were making the case for educators who have proven to be the best. We have full confidence in the schools to make the best use of this additional funding.”

“Education is one of the most important services government provides and school funding is one of our most important responsibilities as legislators,” said Assemblyman Taliaferro. “We are pleased that after a great deal of work with the state, they have made these grants.”

Emergency Aid was authorized by the Legislature in the FY 2019 budget to be granted by the Commissioner of Education for school districts that lost state aid but could demonstrate need for additional funding.
