FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

TEACH-IN SCHEDULED IN PREPARATION FOR MLK MARCH OF RESISTANCE

The Martin Luther King March of Resistance Teach-In will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025, 1:00pm at Bethany Baptist Church, 275 West Market Street in Newark, New Jersey.

The event is sponsored by the People’s Organization For Progress (POP). The theme of the teach-in is “The Teachings of Martin Luther King vs Trump and Trumpism.”

The panelists for the teach-in include Dr Stephanie James Harris, Director of the Africana Studies Program at Seton Hall University; Dr Kelly Harris, professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania; Charles Hall, president, Local 108 Retail Wholesale Department Store Union UFCW AFL-CIO; Deborah Smith-Gregory, president, Newark Branch NAACP; and Lawrence Hamm, chairman, People’s Organization For Progress.

“We are having this teach-in to help prepare people for our upcoming Martin Luther King March of Resistance. The teach-in will explore many of the issues that we will be marching about next week,” Hamm stated.

The march will take place on Saturday, January 18th starting 12 noon at the Martin Luther King Statue, 495 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd in Newark. It is also sponsored by POP but has been endorsed by 270 different organizations.

“I urge people to attend the teach-in. I believe it will help give them a better understanding of the ideas and philosophy of Dr Martin Luther King and how they can assist us in the struggle for racial, social, economic justice and peace,”he said.

“The next four years are going to be difficult. Proposed policies of the incoming Trump administration could further erode the gains of Dr King and the Civil Rights movement,” he said.

“They are going to hurt working people, poor people, the middle class, black and other people of color. They are going to hurt our senior citizens and children, the most vulnerable in society,” Hamm said.

“We must must fight back. We must resist. The life and teaching of Dr King and the history of the Civil Rights Movement can give us valuable lessons and inspiration for the struggle ahead,” he said.
