Teaneck Councilwoman Gervonn Romney Rice Condemns

Johnson, Haider, Park Slate for Campaigning at Candlelight Vigil for Asian Lives

Tonight, members of the Teaneck community gathered at the Black Lives Matter Mural for a vigil in support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Instead of coming together as a community to speak out against racism and white supremacy, Gordon Johnson, Shama Haider and Ellen Park’s campaign decided to use the community event to collect petitions for their June election.

Tonight’s event was meant to be a platform for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to express their grief and pain in response to an alarming uptick in hate crimes against the community. Tonight was meant to be a platform for our community to come together in solidarity to condemn white supremacy. Tonight was not meant to be an event for politicians to exploit for their own gain.

I am calling on the Johnson, Haider, Park ticket to issue an apology to the Teaneck community, particularly the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, for taking advantage of this critical community event.
