Ted Gamble Selected as Interim Mayor and Announces Campaign for Permanent Seat

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – January 22, 2024

Mayor Ted Gamble has been chosen by the majority of the Bloomfield Township council to assume the role of interim mayor until the close of this calendar year. This selection comes in the wake of a series of controversial events that brought the process of nominating vacancies under scrutiny. Mayor Gamble, undeterred by challenges, is rallying for unity and is committed to fostering a town hall that is transparent, inclusive, and responsive.

The appointment of Mayor Gamble followed the unsuccessful motion to seat Councilperson Mundell, failing to secure a majority vote from the council to fill the vacant position. The council vote stood at 4-2, with Councilmembers Joanow, Davis, Rockwell, and Gamble endorsing Mayor Gamble, while Councilpersons Cruz and Mundell cast opposing votes. Mayor Gamble, appreciative of the support, expressed humility, stating, “I am humbled to have received the votes of the majority of my council colleagues. Their support is the highest compliment since they are the people that see my work on a daily basis. Their support also affirms the mission-driven and inclusive work we have been doing over the years.”

Wasting no time, Mayor Gamble outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at propelling Bloomfield forward. The comprehensive plan includes a commitment to budgetary transparency, prioritizing environmental sustainability, establishing an office dedicated to constituency services, and appointing a business development advocate. Mayor Gamble remarked, “Bloomfield has made much progress in the last ten years, and I intend on continuing to move the township forward with transparency, accountability, and responsiveness.” He also called his first townhall staff meeting for 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Mayor Gamble, elected to the council in 2016 and reelected for a third term in November 2022, brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record. A resident of Bloomfield for 13 years, he resides with his wife, son, and Bille Jean, a rescue from the township shelter. An advocate for sustainability, the animal shelter, and Parks, Recreation, and Cultural affairs, Mayor Gamble is a proud Essex County native originally hailing from Maplewood.
